BMW’s i electric subbrand has expanded to include the 2027 iX3 SUV. It rides on the company’s new EV platform, previewed by the Vision Neue Klasse X concept. A 463-hp all-wheel drive electric powertrain is standard, and the iX3’s EPA driving range estimate is over 400 miles per charge.
The iX3 looks quite different from the gas-powered X3, and that is true of the SUV’s cabin as well. An oddly shaped infotainment touchscreen is mounted to the center of the dashboard, and a slim, 43.0-inch digital gauge cluster runs along the base of the windshield. We expect a similar setup to debut on future BMW EVs. Expert Tip: If you’re SUV-averse, a closely related EV sedan called i3 is expected to come next. BMW is planning several more 3-series Neue Klasse variants, including a gas-powered 3-series sedan with similar styling and features. The iX3 is, and although a previous-generation model wearing this nameplate was sold in other parts of the world, 2027 marks the first time this model line has been offered in the U.S.
2027 BMW iX3 Exterior and Interior
First Row: The iX3’s interior features sustainable materials and an airy passenger compartment with adequate space for four adults. The design is modern and upscale. Faux leather upholstery is standard, but genuine cowhide is available as an option, and ambient lighting helps illuminate the cabin. The standard steering wheel comes with a strange squircle design with spokes at the top and bottom, but a more traditional M Sport steering wheel is optional. Climate controls are accessed via the central touchscreen, which may frustrate some users. Second Row: Two adults should find the rear seat spacious and comfortable.
A pair of vents on the back of the center console provides some airflow for rear-seat passengers. There are several USB ports for charging devices. Cargo Capacity: The rear cargo hold is generously sized, and the iX3 also offers a small front trunk (frunk), but the available space is small. Throughout the cabin, several storage cubbies are available to stash smartphones and other small items, including a spot beneath the center console. Infotainment: 17.9-inch touchscreen, 43.0-inch gauge display. Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
Audio System: 13-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo. A uniquely shaped, 17.9-inch central infotainment touchscreen provides the driver and front passenger access to the SUV’s software systems. A narrow, ribbon-like 43.0-inch display spanning the width of the windshield at the forwardmost edge of the dashboard helps make the information more easily readable at a glance. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, as are an in-dash navigation system and a 13-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo system. A head-up display is available as an option.

2027 BMW iX3 EV Motor, Power, and Performance
EV Motor: 463-hp dual motor Drivetrain: all-wheel drive While BMW might add a single-motor variant to the iX3 lineup at some point, we’ve only had the chance to sample the all-wheel drive iX3 50 xDrive fitted with a dual-motor setup, which makes a combined 463 horsepower. The one we drove had plenty of pep and exhibited the formidable body control expected of the Bavarian marque.
The powertrain has a slight bias to the rear wheels, and in the Sport driving mode, it even lets you get a little loose when exiting a corner at speed. That’s sports sedan driving character, and it adds a dose of fun to the iX3’s personality. Braking performance is excellent, and a one-pedal driving mode is offered to maximize energy regeneration for the batterC/D Estimated 60-mph Time: 4.2 seconds. In comparison, the Porsche Macan EV 4S may turn out to be a better performer. It has slightly more horsepower at 509, and pulled off a 3.6-second 60 mph time in our testing. Although towing will significantly reduce the iX3’s driving range—a problem that plagues all EVs—it is rated to pull up to 4400 pounds when it’s equipped with an optional trailer hitch.tch.
A large 112-kWh battery pack lies under the iX3’s floorboards, which is big enough to earn an EPA estimate of 434 miles of driving per charge. When it’s time to re-juice, the battery is said to be capable of charging at speeds up to 400 kilowatts, which the company estimates will enable very fast charging of up to 230 miles in just 10 minutes of plug time. That’s reliant, of course, on access to a DC fast-charging station capable of such speeds. An 11-kW onboard charger is standard, but a 22-kW unit is optional and will enable quicker charging on an AC connection. The EPA hasn’t released fuel economy estimates for the iX3 yet.
When that information is available and when we’ve had a chance to test the iX3 on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, we’ll update this story with details and test results. The iX3 comes standard with the same warranty coverage as BMW’s other electrified models, which means basic coverage for four years or 50,000 miles and more generous protection for the electric-vehicle components.
